The Downtown Fairbanks Walking Tour

Railroad Depot

The railroad depot has been at this location since 1905 when the Tannana Valley Railroad made runs to the gold camps in the area. The Alaska Railroad, connecting Anchorage and Fairbanks, was completed in 1923. The pictured sign shows the northern most point of the Alaska Railroad.

Behind the left side of the railroad sign is a barrel-shaped metal device used to clean and monitor the inside of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. It's called a "pig" because of the squealing sound it make while moving through the pipeline.
