St.
Matthews Episcopal Church
The Episcopalian mission and hospital were established
in Fairbanks in 1904, with a church being built in 1905.
The first service was performed August 15, 1905, with
40 people in attendance. The original church burned
in 1947; only the hand-carved lectern, alter rail and
bell were saved. The present structure was built in
1948. The stained glass behind the alter depicts Alaskan
Natives in biblical scenes. The original bell, inscribed
"Oh ye Frost and Cold, Bless ye the Lord,"
still tolls each Sunday.
