The Downtown Fairbanks Walking Tour

Boardwalk

Back when Fairbanks was young and all of the roads were dirt, raised wooden boardwalks allowed citizens who were walking around town to stay clean and dry. The last remaining piece of the boardwalk is visible next to a concrete sidewalk in front of a cabin from that time period. Sawdust was used as insulation in the walls of these homes; when concrete became available it was used to "chink" gaps between the logs.
