The Downtown Fairbanks Walking Tour

Wickersham Monument

A plaque at the corner of 1st Ave. and Noble St. marks the original site of Jude Wickersham's frame home (the lot is now a gas station, but the actual house can be seen where it was moved at Alaskaland). Wickersham was instrumental in the success of Fairbanks and even after leaving the state in 1907, contunued to support Alaska as a Congressional Delegate. Wickersham, who helped start the Alaska Railroad, Denali Park and the Alaska School of Mines (which later became the University of Alaska Fairbanks), also introduced the first Alaska statehood bill in 1916.
